Whenever I see a maternity photo, I am instantly drawn to it.
I have always wanted to be a mom, and I am so excited that that day will come soon. Seeing women in one of their most powerful states of being has always had me in awe. Like, you have a superpower! Your body has the ability to create and nurture life. It is so incredible to me.
I think that's why I've always wanted to shoot maternity portraits. I did try at one point to only focus on maternity but I think no matter what I do it will always be something I offer.
Dark and moody, just the way I like it.
This was at a time before I was super comfortable using strobes and different lighting types to light my images. I used one window to light this entire session. Thankfully my Sony held it down for me, and still delivered crisp images even at higher ISOs.
When you shoot predominantly natural light, you get to a point where you have to become okay with shadows. I am way past that point of acceptance, so my main objective was to light just enough of her to highlight parts of her face and her belly. Everything else was a plus. (The above image is actually my favorite!)
We moved studios and so the available light has tripled.
So it will take a little more maneuvering to get more of a moody look during the day, but it's certainly not impossible!
I am really grateful for Riley allowing me to capture such a beautiful time in her life! I hope you look at these and want me to capture this time for you as well!
